Defiant Hope: Assam CM’s Powerful Message to ULFA Chief Paresh Baruah Amid I-Day Bomb Threat
Assam Bomb Threat: ULFA-I Claims IEDs Planted Across State, CM Himanta Appeals for Peace
Assam faced a serious bomb threat from the militant group United Liberation Front of Assam (Independent) (ULFA-I) on Thursday. The group claimed to have planted improvised explosive devices (IEDs) at 24 locations throughout the state, including eight sites in Guwahati, with plans to detonate them on Independence Day. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, addressing the media, appealed to ULFA-I chief Paresh Baruah to avoid actions that would hinder the state’s progress.
In his message, CM Himanta emphasized Assam’s developmental strides with significant investments like the Tata Group’s new semiconductor industry. He cautioned that jeopardizing the state’s growth could drive its youth to seek employment outside Assam, thus impeding local development. "After years of stagnation, Assam is finally progressing. Disrupting this momentum would deter more investments and hurt our youth’s future," he stated.
The ULFA-I, a militant organization formed in 1979-80 seeking Assam’s independence from India, issued the threats earlier through emails to media outlets. Responding swiftly, Guwahati Police conducted comprehensive searches and discovered two IED-like objects in Panbazar and Gandhi Basti. Guwahati Police Commissioner Diganta Barah commented, "We executed thorough searches at all eight sites mentioned by ULFA-I. We found two objects resembling IEDs, but they lacked ignition mechanisms. Their explosive nature will be confirmed through chemical tests."
The bomb threat unearthed grim memories of the 2004 Dhemaji bombing, where a blast orchestrated during an Independence Day event killed 18 people, including 10 children. Though police accused ULFA of the attack, the group denied involvement.
CM Himanta’s appeal is a call for peace and sustained development, aiming to deter actions that could alienate investors and disrupt Assam’s journey towards progress.
