Bold Demand: Akhil Gogoi Urges Assam CM to Transparently Reveal Wife’s Assets by August 22
Guwahati, August 13: Sivasagar MLA and Raijor Dal chief Akhil Gogoi has posed a public challenge to Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. In a bold move, Gogoi has demanded that the Chief Minister disclose the list of properties owned by his wife, Riniki Bhuyan Sharma, by August 22, coinciding with the commencement of the autumn session of the Assam Legislative Assembly.
Addressing a gathering at Kendukona, Gogoi claimed possession of lists detailing the properties owned by Sarma’s wife. He urged the Chief Minister to reveal these assets publicly via the media channel owned by Bhuyan Sharma, before the Assembly session begins. Gogoi emphasized the necessity for transparency, calling for Sarma to also make his will public to clarify future ownership of the assets. “The public deserves to know the designated recipients of these properties,” Gogoi stated. “If the will indicates these assets are handed to the public, his family would face no issues."
This demand is in response to a prior statement by CM Sarma, where he announced that his wife’s properties—including schools, resorts, and land used for temples—are meant for the people of Assam. Sarma had specified that their children would not inherit these assets. “Our kids will not get these. When you read the will, you’ll understand,” Sarma remarked, also noting that their family-owned news channel would eventually be transferred to the public.
Sarma’s declaration came after opposition parties accused him of targeting the University of Science and Technology, Meghalaya (USTM), blaming it for artificial floods in Guwahati, purportedly due to disagreements with the institution’s owner.
With the autumn session of the Assam Legislative Assembly approaching, Gogoi’s ultimatum has heightened anticipation and promises a charged atmosphere. His call for transparency from the Chief Minister adds another layer of intrigue to the political landscape in Assam.
