U.S. Consulate Team Triumphs at ICWO’s First Diplomat Cricket Tournament
In an event aimed at raising awareness and funds to combat child abuse, trafficking, marriage, and labor in Tamil Nadu, the Indian Community Welfare Organisation (ICWO) organised its inaugural Diplomat Cricket Tournament last Saturday. Held in Chennai, the tournament saw embassy, consulate, and high commission staff competing, with the team from the U.S. Consulate emerging victorious.
The event featured notable speakers highlighting the gravity of human trafficking, including Saravana Kumar Kumaravasagam, Consulate General, Consulate of Malaysia, who labelled it a significant global issue and the third largest international criminal enterprise. Kumaravasagam emphasized that human trafficking is a grave organised crime affecting millions, particularly women and children worldwide.
Nawabzada Mohammed Asif Ali, Dewan to the Prince of Arcot, noted the dual purpose of the gathering, celebrating both the spirit of cricket and the strong relationships that enhance global solidarity. A.J. Hariharan, ICWO secretary, underscored the need for collective action against crimes targeting children in Tamil Nadu and announced plans for a men’s and women’s doubles badminton tournament next year.
The event witnessed participation from dignitaries including Gwendolyn, Management Officer, U.S. Consulate General, Chennai, M. Rajkumar, Chairperson, Child Welfare Committee, Chennai, Meera Murugesan, principal, Soka Ikeda College for Women, and Natharsha Malim, State Coordinator-Tamil Nadu, Bachpan Bachao Andolan. The gathering not only spotlighted a pressing social issue but also strengthened international camaraderie through sport.
