Exciting Appointment: Nanigopal Mahanta Takes Charge as 18th Visionary VC of Gauhati University!
Assam’s Education Minister, Ranoj Pegu, has announced the appointment of Prof. Nanigopal Mahanta as the new Vice-Chancellor of Gauhati University. Mahanta, an eminent academic and professor of political science at Gauhati University, will become the institution’s 18th Vice-Chancellor. With a robust academic background that includes a master’s in political science from Jawaharlal Nehru University and another in Peace, Conflict Resolution & Policy Studies from the University of California, Berkeley, Mahanta is expected to spearhead significant reforms focusing on academic excellence, research, and infrastructure development.
Prof. Mahanta has previously served as an education adviser to the Assam government and has held various administrative roles, including chairing several commissions and committees. He has also authored numerous books on diverse subjects and completed his PhD on “State, Identity and Politics of Violence: ULFA and vision of peace in Assam” at Gauhati University in 2006.
Minister Pegu extended his congratulations to Mahanta via X (formerly Twitter), emphasizing the hope that his leadership will further empower students and elevate the university to new heights of academic excellence. The university community anticipates substantial reforms and initiatives under Mahanta’s tenure to enhance the institution’s academic and research capabilities.
