India’s Shocking Freshwater Treasure: Raj Bhushan Choudhary Reveals the Astonishing 4% Global Reserve
In a recent address to the Rajya Sabha, Raj Bhushan Choudhary, the Minister of State for Jal Shakti, highlighted India’s significant reliance on groundwater resources. He noted that India is among the largest groundwater users globally.
Choudhary emphasized that despite having only about 4 percent of the world’s freshwater reserves, India must meet the demands of a population that constitutes approximately 17 percent of the global total.
Discussing the country’s groundwater resources, he revealed that India’s total annual extractable groundwater is estimated at 407.21 billion cubic meters. However, the nation currently extracts 241.34 billion cubic meters of groundwater annually, underscoring the critical importance of sustainable water management practices to safeguard this vital resource.
These figures illustrate the pressing need for efficient groundwater utilization and the pivotal role it plays in ensuring water security for India’s vast population.
