Disappointing News: Apple’s Game-Changing AI Features to Miss Upcoming iPhone Software Overhaul
Apple Inc.’s forthcoming artificial intelligence (AI) features, known as Apple Intelligence, will be delayed from their originally anticipated launch alongside new iPhone and iPad software updates. The company plans to begin rolling out these AI capabilities by October, missing the initial September release of iOS 18 and iPadOS 18, to allow more time for bug fixes, according to sources familiar with the matter.
In an uncommon move, Apple will make Apple Intelligence available to software developers for early testing through iOS 18.1 and iPadOS 18.1 betas starting this week. This is seen as critical to ensure a smooth release by leveraging developer feedback to address potential stability issues. This approach marks a departure from Apple’s usual strategy, which typically does not involve releasing previews of subsequent updates before the initial public rollout of new software versions.
The delayed AI features, including improved notifications, web and voice note summaries, advanced writing tools, an overhauled Siri, and integration with OpenAI’s ChatGPT, signify Apple’s commitment to a stable launch. The full suite of Apple Intelligence updates will roll out incrementally through the end of 2024 and into the first half of 2025.
Apple’s decision to separate these AI features from the initial software update came partly due to concerns about their stability. As a result, the first iPhone 16 models delivered to consumers will likely ship without these new AI functionalities, necessitating a software update weeks later.
Announced at June’s Worldwide Developers Conference, Apple Intelligence is expected to be a significant competitive asset in the evolving generative AI landscape. The AI features will also extend to Mac computers as part of macOS Sequoia and are in development for the Vision Pro, albeit with a later release date.
Despite the delay, Apple is banking on these innovative features to drive interest in the iPhone 16, which will come with minor design updates but substantial software enhancements to attract buyers. This aligns with the company’s broader aim to bolster its offerings and remain competitive in an increasingly AI-driven market.
