Urgent Plea in Delhi HC: Prevent Tragic Coaching Center Deaths Now!
In the aftermath of the tragic deaths of three civil service aspirants in the basement of a waterlogged coaching center, a plea has been filed in the Delhi High Court. The plea seeks a directive for the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) to take immediate measures to prevent such incidents in the future. Filed by the NGO Hindu Rashtriya Pravasi Manch, the plea demands an independent inquiry to ascertain the accountability of the MCD, Rau’s IAS Study Centre, and the Delhi Government.
Additionally, the plea insists on adequate compensation for the victims’ families and the injured. It also calls for mandatory regular inspections by the MCD and the Delhi Government to ensure all educational institutions and commercial establishments comply with safety regulations and possess the necessary licenses.
Advocate Dr. AP Singh, representing the NGO, highlighted that despite continuous protests by affected families and citizens since the incident, no higher authority has yet addressed the issue. The petitioner and the affected families demand transparency regarding the number of injuries and deaths and immediate action against those responsible for the negligence.
The plea underscores the MCD’s failure in properly maintaining drainage and ensuring safety measures, pointing out that illegal operations and lack of safety in the basement exacerbated the situation. It also criticizes many of the city’s educational coaching centers, particularly in areas like Mukherjee Nagar and Rajender Nagar, for ignoring safety norms and risking students’ lives.
Following a major fire incident in a coaching center in Mukherjee Nagar last year, the Delhi High Court had already ordered the shutdown of any such centers not adhering to prescribed fire safety norms. The court had emphasised that student safety is a critical necessity and mandated compliance with the Delhi Master Plan 2021 and other relevant regulations. This latest plea reinforces the need for stringent safety checks and accountability to prevent further tragedies.
