Guwahati: Following the Unesco designation of the Moidams, the royal burial mounds of Ahom kings and queens in Charaideo, as a World Heritage Site, there has been a significant surge in visitor numbers. The Moidams, known for their pyramid-like structures, are a unique funerary tradition of the Tai-Ahom royals, spanning from the 13th to the 19th century. These mounds, containing the remains of Ahom royalty along with grave goods, have long attracted researchers, history buffs, and tourists worldwide.

Since the Unesco recognition, officials noted daily visitors nearly doubled—rising from around 120 to almost 300, even though it is not the tourist season in Assam. An upcoming museum at the site will display artifacts from the Ahom era, offering deeper insights into the period’s rich history and culture.

Tourism officials and local authorities are optimistic about Charaideo’s potential as a major tourism hub in the northeast. Arijit Purkayastha, chapter chairman of the Association of Domestic Tour Operators of India, highlighted the need for better infrastructure, including improved roads, more homestays, and clean facilities to enhance the visitor experience.

Recognized as the first cultural property from Northeast India to be included in the Unesco World Heritage List, the Moidams’ addition underlines their architectural and historical significance. This recognition has brought a renewed focus on Assam’s rich heritage, with Prime Minister Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah acknowledging the milestone’s importance for the region.

The surge in visitors marks the beginning of a new chapter for Charaideo, positioning it as a prime tourist destination in the region. As the site continues to develop its facilities and interpretative offerings, it is expected to attract an even broader audience, eager to explore the legacy of the Ahom dynasty.
