Israel Vows Swift and Decisive Retaliation Against Hezbollah After Deadly Rocket Attack Claims 12 Lives on Football Field
Thousands Mourn Children Killed by Rocket Strike in Golan Heights
Thousands gathered in Majdal Shams, a Druze village in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights, to mourn 12 children and teenagers killed by a rocket from Lebanon. The attack incited fierce vows of retaliation from Israel against Hezbollah militia in Lebanon, although Hezbollah has denied any involvement.
The incident marks the deadliest attack in Israeli or Israeli-annexed territory since the conflict sparked by Hamas’ assault on Gaza in October. With tensions already high, the situation now threatens wider regional instability. Israeli jets have already struck targets in southern Lebanon, and stronger responses are anticipated following a security cabinet meeting led by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken affirmed the rocket was fired by Hezbollah, standing by Israel’s right to self-defense while urging against further escalation. Meanwhile, Britain and Egypt expressed concerns over potential regional war.
The funerals, attended by numerous mourners donning traditional Druze attire, underscored the profound grief in Majdal Shams. "A heavy tragedy, a dark day has come to Majdal Shams," said Dolan Abu Saleh, head of the local council. Hezbollah initially claimed responsibility for targeting Israeli military sites but denied involvement in the attack on the children.
Israel identified the rocket as Iranian-made and attributed responsibility to Hezbollah, which it termed unequivocally responsible. The strike’s victims’ identities remain unclear, but Israeli officials pledged swift retaliation. Hezbollah remains on high alert, vacating key sites, while Lebanon’s government urges restraint.
In response to the escalating situation, Iran and Syria warned Israel against further aggression. The conflict has already displaced tens of thousands and caused significant casualties on both sides.
United Nations officials have urged maximum caution to prevent further escalation. As regional tensions simmer, all efforts are directed towards averting a full-scale war, which could have devastating consequences across the Middle East.
