Breaking News: MCD Shuts Down 13 Hazardous Coaching Centres in Delhi’s Old Rajinder Nagar
In the wake of a fatal flooding incident at an IAS coaching centre in Delhi that claimed three lives, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has swiftly responded by sealing 13 coaching centres in Old Rajinder Nagar for regulatory infractions. The tragedy has sparked criticism of the MCD’s inadequate enforcement of building norms.
A civic body inspection on Sunday revealed unauthorized commercial activities in the basements of several coaching centres, leading to their immediate closure. Delhi Mayor Shelly Oberoi publicized the crackdown via social media, indicating the possibility of a broader campaign across the city if needed.
“Following yesterday’s tragic incident, MCD has initiated the process of sealing all coaching centres in Rajinder Nagar that are violating basement regulations. This campaign could extend across Delhi if required,” the Mayor stated on X.
The centres sealed include IAS Gurukul, Chahal Academy, Plutus Academy, Sai Trading, IAS Setu, Topper’s Academy, Dainik Samwad, Civil’s Daily IAS, Career Power, 99 Notes, Vidya Guru, Guidance IAS, and Easy for IAS.
Mayor Oberoi has instructed the MCD Commissioner to take stringent measures against coaching centres illegally operating in basements and called for an investigation into potential negligence by MCD officers connected to Rau’s IAS Study Circle, where the fatalities occurred. “If any official is found guilty, the strongest possible action will be taken against them,” she stated.
The MCD is facing backlash for lapses in enforcing building regulations. Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) activists protested outside the Mayor’s residence, demanding accountability for the tragic deaths.
Last year’s major fire at an IAS coaching institute in Mukherjee Nagar led to a survey identifying coaching centres flouting building codes, but the initiative was allegedly discontinued midway.
The recent flooding, which resulted in the deaths of three civil service aspirants, highlighted severe drainage issues at the institute and its surroundings. Additionally, the coaching centre lacked the requisite permissions to operate a basement library, exacerbating the tragedy.
