Triumph and Valor: Heartfelt Tributes to Kargil Heroes
As the nation commemorates the 25th anniversary of its 1999 victory over Pakistan in the Kargil War, let’s take a look at some Hindi films that pay tribute to the real heroes of this conflict, in which over 500 soldiers sacrificed their lives.
LOC: Kargil (2003):
A pioneering effort to bring the Kargil War to the silver screen, "LOC: Kargil" stars Sanjay Dutt, Ajay Devgn, Abhishek Bachchan, Saif Ali Khan, and Suniel Shetty. Directed by JP Dutta, who also helmed the acclaimed "Border," the film showcases the sacrifices made during Operation Vijay as the Indian Army fought off Pakistani intrusions along the Line of Control. Despite its star-studded cast, the film didn’t perform well at the box office, perhaps because the wounds of the recent war were still too fresh in the public’s memory.
Lakshya (2004):
Directed by Farhan Akhtar, "Lakshya" is a significant film in both his and Hrithik Roshan’s careers. This movie tells the story of a directionless young man who finds purpose by joining the Army and fighting in the Kargil War. While it wasn’t as commercially successful as Akhtar’s debut film "Dil Chahta Hai," "Lakshya" resonated with the youth, inspiring many to consider a career in the Indian Army.
Gunjan Saxena: The Kargil Girl (2020):
Released on Netflix during the COVID-19 pandemic, this film stars Janhvi Kapoor, winning her career’s best reviews. Directed by Sharan Sharma, it chronicles the journey of Gunjan Saxena, an Indian Air Force officer who dreamt of becoming a pilot since childhood. Pankaj Tripathi plays the pivotal role of her supportive father. The movie captures Saxena’s crucial contributions during the Kargil War.
Shershaah (2021):
Featuring Sidharth Malhotra and Kiara Advani, "Shershaah" also came out during the pandemic. Directed by Vishnuvardhan, the film tells the inspiring story of Vikram Batra, the Kargil war hero who was posthumously awarded the Param Vir Chakra. Malhotra’s compelling performance as Batra struck a deep chord with audiences.
These films not only entertain but also remind us of the valor and sacrifices of those who served during the Kargil War.
