Revolutionary Collaboration: Transformative X-Band Doppler Weather Radar Unveiled by IMD and Assam University
In a significant step toward enhancing weather forecasting, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) and Assam University, Silchar, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the installation of an X-Band Doppler Weather Radar on the university campus. The MoU was formalized by Dr. P.K. Nath, Registrar of Assam University, and K.N. Mohan, Scientist-G and Head of the Regional Meteorological Centre in Guwahati.
Representing IMD at the signing were Dr. Sanjay O’Neill Shaw, Scientist-F, Dr. S.I. Laskar, Scientist-E, and Rajnikant Nirala, SA. From Assam University, notable attendees included Dr. R.M. Pant, Vice Chancellor; Prof. Piyush Kumar Pandey, Director of IQAC; Shubhadeep Dhar, Finance Officer; Dr. Suprabir Roy, Controller of Examinations; Jayant Bhatta, Director of College Development Council; Prof. Parthankar Choudhury, Dean of the School of Ecology and Environmental Science; and Prof. (Dr.) Atri Deshmukhya from the Department of Physics.
The installation of the X-Band Doppler Weather Radar is poised to significantly aid in advancing research activities and enhancing weather prediction accuracy, particularly benefiting the Cachar region and its surroundings. This development forms a part of IMD’s broader initiative to augment meteorological capabilities in the Northeastern states, which includes the deployment of 11 Doppler Radars across the region.
This collaboration underscores a major leap in leveraging technological advancements for environmental research and disaster preparedness. Both IMD and Assam University are committed to utilizing this cutting-edge equipment to foster a deeper understanding of meteorological phenomena and improve the safety and well-being of local communities.
