United We Stand: Netanyahu’s Compelling Call for US-Israel Solidarity to Congress
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu emphasized the importance of US-Israeli unity in the fight against Hamas during a joint session of Congress, despite notable resistance. His address, which garnered multiple standing ovations, came as about two dozen Democratic lawmakers boycotted the event and law enforcement used pepper spray to control protesters outside the Capitol.
Netanyahu stressed the necessity of the alliance, stating, “For the forces of civilization to triumph, America and Israel must stand together.” His remarks highlighted the strong bipartisan support he enjoys in the US, although criticism has increased over the war’s toll. According to the Gaza health ministry, approximately 39,000 Palestinians have perished.
The context of Netanyahu’s speech was especially charged, following President Joe Biden’s announcement that he will not seek reelection, endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris instead. This came on the heels of an assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump, who was injured at a Pennsylvania rally.
Notably absent from the event was Harris, due to a prior campaign commitment in Indianapolis. She and Biden are scheduled to meet Netanyahu later this week. Elon Musk, a supporter of Trump, attended the session at Netanyahu’s invitation. Although Netanyahu praised Biden as a “proud Zionist,” he has displayed a preference for Trump, planning to meet him at Mar-a-Lago.
The address occurred amid tight security, with Capitol Police arresting numerous anti-Israel demonstrators who accused Netanyahu of war crimes in Gaza. Enhanced security measures included road closures and fencing around the Capitol complex.
