Exploring Hyderabad and Telangana: Monsoon Weekend Getaways

As the intense summer heat in Hyderabad and Telangana eases into a refreshing monsoon season, the allure of weekend getaways becomes irresistible. Popular spots like Nagarjuna Sagar, Yelleswaragattu Island, Bhongir Fort, and the UNESCO-listed Ramappa Temple in Warangal are worth visiting, while hidden gems such as Pakhal Lake, Somasila, and Ali Sagar Reservoir offer unique experiences. Visitors should consider potential waterlogging and slippery conditions, and obtain necessary permissions for activities like trekking.

Bhongir Fort in Nalgonda, approximately 50 kilometers from Hyderabad, is a hiker’s paradise. Advocate Sneha Bhogle, a recent visitor, recounted her experience of witnessing enthusiastic climbers, some preparing for an Everest base camp trek. Bhongir Fort offers both stairs and rappelling options, providing breathtaking views from its summit. Remember to carry essentials like food and water for a rewarding family outing.

Mohammed Ahmed from the Great Hyderabad Adventure Club (GHAC) suggests various destinations based on routes from Hyderabad. Highlights include Oravakallu Rock Gardens, Gandikota, and Belum Caves in Andhra Pradesh, as well as Pakhal Lake and Wildlife Sanctuary, Koilsagar dam and fort, Somasila, and Medak Fort in Telangana. Camping enthusiasts can explore Pocharam Lake and the Wildlife Sanctuary but should seek prior permissions.

Ahmed advises caution during rain-soaked days for activities like trekking, rappelling, and rock climbing. The Sahyadri or Western Ghats have also gained popularity among Hyderabad’s trekking community, with destinations like Rajgad and Torna in Maharashtra.

For cycling enthusiasts, monsoon presents an ideal time for both short and long-distance rides. Sanjay Yadav of the Hyderabad Randonneurs group recommends routes such as Gachibowli-Shamshabad, Osman Sagar, Himayat Sagar, and Ananthagiri Hills. Sanjay emphasizes cycling in groups and carrying first aid and tool kits for a safe journey.

Overall, Hyderabad and Telangana offer myriad options for an invigorating monsoon getaway, whether you’re a trekking, camping, or cycling enthusiast.
