SHILLONG, July 23: The anticipated meeting between Union Home Minister Amit Shah and the leaders of 10 autonomous and territorial councils from the Northeastern region has been rescheduled for Wednesday. KHADC CEM Pyniaid Sing Syiem, who also serves as the convener for the forum representing these councils, confirmed the postponement after receiving official communication on Tuesday.
Syiem, who had to return to Shillong earlier to attend the inauguration of the KHADC library by Governor Phagu Chauhan, will now fly to Delhi on Wednesday morning to participate in the pivotal meeting. The agenda with the Union Home Minister revolves around the Constitution (One Hundred and Twenty-fifth Amendment) Bill, 2019, which seeks to amend the Sixth Schedule.
Syiem stressed the importance of this dialogue as it is expected to shed light on the central government’s stance regarding the proposed constitutional amendments. He emphasized their objective to advocate for the amendment bill to be presented during the ongoing budget session. “We will be more than happy even if the Union Home Minister gives us an assurance that the amendment bill will be tabled in the next session,” Syiem stated.
