Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi on Monday to discuss the state’s ongoing flood crisis. CM Sarma provided PM Modi with a detailed update on the flood situation, outlining the various measures being undertaken to address the challenges faced by Assam’s residents.
CM Sarma shared on social media, “Had the absolute privilege of seeking the blessings and guidance of Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri @narendramodiJi today.” During the meeting, the Chief Minister also briefed the Prime Minister on the progress of developmental projects in the state.
In addition to discussing flood relief efforts, CM Sarma conveyed the congratulations of the people of Assam to PM Modi on his historic third term. He expressed, “On behalf of the people of Assam, I once again extended our heartfelt congratulations as he embarks on a historic third term.”
The floods have severely impacted several regions of Assam, displacing thousands of residents and causing significant damage to infrastructure, including roads, bridges, and embankments. The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) reports that over 12,929 displaced individuals are currently housed in 62 relief camps, while 14 relief distribution centres are assisting 17,341 flood-affected people. Furthermore, 13,804.36 hectares of cropland remain submerged.
The districts most affected by the flooding include Kamrup, Morigaon, Dibrugarh, Golaghat, Goalpara, Sivasagar, Cachar, Dhubri, Karimganj, Nalbari, Nagaon, Dhemaji, and Kamrup Metropolitan.
The ongoing flood situation in Assam highlights the urgent need for continued relief and infrastructure repair efforts to support the displaced population and restore normalcy in the affected regions.
