Urgent Relief: Meghalaya CM Heroically Rescues 40 Citizens from Violence-Stricken Dhaka

Forty citizens from Meghalaya, predominantly medical students, are being evacuated from Dhaka, Bangladesh today, July 20, amidst ongoing violent protests. They will enter India through Agartala before proceeding to Shillong.

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma announced the evacuation on Twitter, highlighting the coordinated efforts with the Indian Embassy in Dhaka. “Forty Meghalaya citizens, mostly medical students, are being evacuated from Dhaka today. They will enter via Agartala and will make an onward journey to Shillong,” Sangma tweeted.

This operation follows the earlier repatriation of 405 Indian students, including 80 from Meghalaya, through Dawki in the West Jaintia Hills District. The ongoing unrest in Bangladesh has necessitated these measures for the safe return of Indian nationals.

Despite the current evacuation, Chief Minister Sangma noted that 36 students from Eastern Medical College remain stranded in violence-affected areas. He reassured parents that the college’s vicinity is stable but warned of potential risks during transit.

The Meghalaya government is in constant communication with Tripura officials and the Indian High Commission in Bangladesh to ensure secure passage for the returnees. Sangma stressed the importance of clearly defined and safe routes before conducting further evacuations.

In response to the challenges posed by this crisis, the state government plans to introduce an online portal for Meghalayan students studying abroad. This portal will allow students to register their contact details, facilitating streamlined communication and expedited assistance in future emergencies. The proposal for this initiative will be presented for approval at the next cabinet meeting.

The Chief Minister urged all Meghalaya students abroad to register on the forthcoming portal with their contact information. This will create a comprehensive database, ensuring a rapid response in the event of future global emergencies.
