Captain Brijesh Thapa Laid to Rest with Full Military Honours
Darjeeling, July 20, 2024: Captain Brijesh Thapa was laid to rest with full military honours in his ancestral village of Ging, near Darjeeling, after his remains were returned to the village. Thousands, including political leaders and community members, gathered to pay their final respects to the 27-year-old officer who was martyred during an encounter with terrorists in Jammu & Kashmir on July 15.
The funeral, marked by a solemn procession and a guard of honour, highlighted the immense respect and gratitude towards Captain Thapa. A prayer service was held at a local monastery before the cremation.
Captain Thapa’s father, Col. (Retd.) Bhuwanesh Thapa, expressed pride in his son’s sacrifice, noting the continuing support of the Indian Army to bereaved families. "The love and affection from the country and the Gorkha community lessen my loss. I am proud of him," he said.
Reflecting on the legacy of service within the Gorkha community, Col. Thapa stated, "It is in the blood of the Gorkhas to sacrifice for the country."
Gorkha Janmukti Morcha president Bimal Gurung and Hamro Party president Ajoy Edwards, both present at the funeral, also expressed pride and sorrow for Captain Thapa’s ultimate sacrifice. Gurung remarked on the historical sacrifices made by the Gorkha community since India’s independence, while Edwards shared the collective pride the nation feels for Captain Thapa.
Captain Brijesh Thapa was part of the 145 Army Air Defence and had served with the 10 Rashtriya Rifles for two years. He sustained fatal injuries during an operation in the Desa forest belt of Doda District.
The heartfelt tributes and the significant presence at Captain Thapa’s funeral serve as a poignant reminder of the bravery and dedication of India’s armed forces.
