Exciting News: Transformative Rail Line Connecting Mizoram Set for Completion by July 2025!
The Bairabi-Sairang railway line, a critical infrastructural project set to put Mizoram on India’s railway map, is expected to be commissioned by July next year, officials announced on Friday. According to the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR), 93% of the 51.38-km railway line is already complete. The update was provided to Governor Hari Babu Kambhampati during a project review meeting.
This railway line features four stations: Hortoki, Kawnpui, Mualkhang, and Sairang. The Governor was briefed that the section up to Hortoki will be operational within the next few days, with a successful trial run already conducted on the Bairabi-Hortoki stretch. Additionally, services up to Mualkhang station are intended to commence in the upcoming months. The full line, reaching Sairang near Aizawl, is on track for completion by July next year.
This railway project, sanctioned in the 2008-09 period and revised to cost Rs 8,213.72 crore, is poised to significantly impact Mizoram’s economy. By enhancing connectivity, it is expected to also boost the state’s tourism industry. Governor Kambhampati highlighted the anticipated benefits, noting that the project will reduce travel time and transportation costs between Assam and Mizoram.
The railway line begins at Bairabi on the Assam-Mizoram border and includes substantial engineering works with 55 major bridges, 87 minor bridges, and 32 tunnels. Construction began in 2015, and as it nears completion, the anticipation for its economic and social benefits continues to grow.
The commissioning of this line will mark a significant milestone in the region’s development, improving infrastructure and connectivity in Mizoram while enabling easier access for goods and passengers, thereby fostering growth and prosperity.
