YouTuber Faces Legal Action for Unauthorized Use of Copyrighted Content

In a recent incident, Shahanur Islam, a YouTuber from Dhubri, Assam, is facing legal action for unauthorized use of India Today Group’s copyrighted material. Islam uploaded a segment from India Today NE’s exclusive interview, "Newsmakers in the House ft. Rakibul Hussain (EP-1)," on his YouTube channel ‘D. বার্তা 24×7’. He shared the content without permission, making it publicly accessible under the title "ৰাষ্ট্ৰীয় নিউজ চেনেনলৰ ষ্টুডিওত গৈ কি দশা হল ৰকিবুলৰ, চাওঁক এবাৰ। শ্বেয়াৰ, কমেন্ট প্লিজ। #viral #asmr."

Originally, India Today NE had published the interview with Congress MP Rakibul Hussain across its official social media platforms on July 12, 2024. Upon discovering Islam’s act, the channel noted that he not only reproduced a portion of the interview but also added his channel’s logo, misleading viewers into believing he owned the content. This action diverted viewers from India Today NE’s original platforms to Islam’s, thereby violating their exclusive rights.

In response, India Today NE issued a legal notice to Shahanur Islam, demanding the removal of the unauthorized content from all his platforms. The notice proposed an amicable resolution, giving Islam seven days to acknowledge receipt and comply with the removal request.

This move by India Today Group sends a clear warning to other content creators about copyright infringement. The Group remains determined to take similar legal actions against any unauthorized use of its copyrighted material.

India Today NE operates across traditional TV, digital platforms, and various social media profiles under the trademark ‘INDIA TODAY NE,’ providing news and updates about events in Northeast India, including Assam, Sikkim, and Manipur.

The Copyright Act of 1957 safeguards intellectual property rights in India, granting creators exclusive control over their works’ use, reproduction, and distribution. This law plays a crucial role in protecting all forms of literary, artistic, and musical works, ensuring that creators can safeguard their intellectual property.
