PATNA, July 17: A special court in Patna has remanded Pankaj Kumar, the primary suspect in the NEET-UG paper leak case, to 14-day custody of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). Kumar, who also goes by Aditya, is accused of stealing exam papers from a National Testing Agency (NTA) trunk in Hazaribagh, Jharkhand. During this time, until July 30, the CBI plans to interrogate Kumar regarding his involvement and connections with other gang members, financial transactions, and local contacts involved in the theft.

Alongside Kumar, the CBI took Raju Singh into 10-day custody. Both men were apprehended by the CBI, with Kumar being captured in Patna and Singh in Hazaribagh. Kumar is a 2017 civil engineering graduate from the National Institute of Technology, Jamshedpur, and resides in Bokaro. Singh’s arrest followed thorough questioning, which also led the CBI to temporarily seal the Raj Guest House in Hazaribagh as part of the investigation.

Further arrests include Jamaluddin Ansari, a journalist, and Ehsanul Haque and Imtiaz Alam, principal and vice-principal of Oasis School respectively. The latter two were designated as district coordinators by the NTA. According to the Economic Offences Wing (EOU) of the Bihar Police, the leaked NEET-UG question paper originated from Oasis School and was allegedly sourced by the notorious Sanjeev Kumar alias Lutan Mukhiya solver gang.

Investigators confirmed the paper leak by matching a partially-burnt question paper found in a Patna safe house with a reference paper from the NTA. However, they have yet to conclusively identify the mastermind behind the leak.

The ongoing investigation underlines the broader implications of examination integrity and the significant efforts by authorities to uncover the network behind such illicit activities. The case continues to develop as the CBI delves deeper into the suspects’ connections and motives.
