Record-Breaking Surge: Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport Passenger Traffic Soars by 7% in Q1 FY2025
Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) experienced a significant surge in passenger traffic, accommodating over 13.4 million travelers in the first quarter (Q1) of the financial year (FY) 2025. This represents a growth of over 7% compared to the same period last year, according to a report by ANI. Data from Mumbai International Airport Limited (MIAL), which manages CSMIA, indicated that approximately 3.7 million passengers traveled internationally, while 9.7 million opted for domestic flights during this period.
In Q1 FY2024-25, CSMIA recorded a total passenger count of 13.46 million, up from 12.49 million in Q1 FY2023-24. The quarter commenced strongly with 4.3 million passengers in April, climbing to 4.7 million in May, reflecting a month-on-month growth of 7.9%. June saw 4.39 million passengers, underscoring steady demand for air travel from Mumbai.
During this busy period, CSMIA facilitated 59,775 domestic Air Traffic Movements (ATMs) and 21,519 international ATMs, marking a 4% increase from Q1 FY2023-24. May 2024 emerged as the peak month, with 4.7 million passengers, and the highest single-day traffic recorded on May 18, witnessing 163,166 travelers.
MIAL pointed out that Delhi, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad were the leading domestic destinations from CSMIA, attracting over 6.9 million passengers. On the international front, Dubai, Singapore, and London topped the list, with Dubai being the favored destination for over 0.61 million passengers. Collectively, the top five international destinations served over 1.5 million passengers, whereas the top three domestic destinations catered to more than 3.4 million passengers.
Furthermore, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) reported that domestic airlines transported 793.48 lakh passengers from January to June 2024, up from 760.93 lakh during the same timeframe the previous year, illustrating an annual growth of 4.28%.
This robust growth in passenger traffic highlights the increasing demand for both domestic and international air travel from Mumbai, positioning CSMIA as a critical hub in India’s aviation landscape.
