Today marked a significant development in Assam as the government formally handed over land in Morigaon to the Tata Group for its mega semiconductor plant. Following the lease agreement, which took place at the Sub-Registrar’s office in Morigaon, Tata Group now holds a 60-year lease on 517.27 bighas of land.

This landmark deal was signed by Tata Group’s Chief Human Resources Officer Ranjan Bandopadhyay and AIDC’s Project Manager Dhiraj Pegu. District Commissioner Devasish Sharma, who facilitated the proceedings alongside Sub-Registrar Namrata Chahu, heralded the occasion as historic. He noted that Tata’s production facility is set to begin operations by 2026.

The ceremony was attended by top officials from Tata Electronics Pvt Ltd, including Assistant Vice President Kaninika Thakur and Executive Amoolya Huilgal. Other attendees included Legal Executive Nidhiya Jayaraman, HR Col Vikas Bhomia, and Project Team members Ashish Mishra and Avinash Dhabade.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had previously laid the foundation stone for the semiconductor plant in Jagiroad, Morigaon, on March 13, marking a technological milestone for Assam. The Rs 27,000 crore investment is expected to produce 48 million chips daily and create 16,000 jobs. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sharma was also present at this groundbreaking event and emphasized the significance of this initiative for the region, previously overlooked in past industrial revolutions.

The Tata Semiconductor Assembly and Test Pvt Ltd (TSAT) unit in Assam aims to support automotive, electric vehicles, consumer electronics, telecom, and mobile phone sectors. The plant is part of Tata Group’s broader strategy to bolster indigenous semiconductor manufacturing in India, which gained urgency due to chip shortages during the COVID-19 pandemic. The Tata plants in Gujarat and Assam will both commence production in 2026, addressing national security concerns and fostering local innovation.
