Gandhinagar, July 16 (IANS) – Heightened surveillance is pivotal for the early detection and treatment of the Chandipura virus, which has tragically claimed six children’s lives and affected 12 people in Gujarat, stated doctors on Tuesday.
Gujarat Health Minister Rushikesh Patel reported that the virus is suspected to have caused six fatalities in the past five days, with the total cases reaching 12 — nine from Gujarat, two from Rajasthan, and one from Madhya Pradesh. All patients underwent treatment in Gujarat, and their samples have been dispatched to the National Institute of Virology (NIV), Pune for verification.
Understanding Chandipura Virus:
Chandipura virus, named after a village in Maharashtra where it was first identified in 1965, is an arbovirus from the vesicular virus genus of the Rhabdoviridae family, primarily transmitted by phlebotomine sandflies, and occasionally by ticks and mosquitoes. The virus is notably dangerous for children, causing severe and often fatal illnesses.
According to Dr. Neha Rastogi Panda of Fortis Memorial Research Institute, the virus garners attention due to its potential to induce severe symptoms such as high-grade fever, diarrhoea, vomiting, seizures, and altered sensorium, potentially leading to death within 24 to 72 hours. Outbreaks have primarily been reported in India, posing significant public health challenges due to the high mortality rate associated with infections.
Urgency of Early Detection:
There are currently no specific antiviral treatments or vaccines against the Chandipura virus. Experts emphasize the importance of early diagnosis and treatment to mitigate the disease’s rapid and fatal progression. Symptoms usually start with high fever, headaches, vomiting, and altered mental status, rapidly advancing to seizures and encephalitis.
Public Health Strategies:
Experts advocate for insecticide use to eliminate vectors and recommend public health strategies including insect repellents, bed nets, and raising awareness about disease risks and symptoms. Enhanced surveillance and research can help understand the virus’s transmission dynamics and develop effective treatments or vaccines, ultimately reducing the impact of this deadly virus.
