AJP Outraged: Powerful Rebuke to Assam Govt’s Shocking Directive to Border Cops on Immigrants
Guwahati, July 16: The Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) has expressed serious concern over a recent directive from the Assam government, instructing the state’s border police not to refer citizenship cases involving Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, Parsis, and Christians who entered India before December 31, 2014, to foreigners’ tribunals.
In a statement, AJP President Lurinjyoti Gogoi and General Secretary Jagdish Bhuyan condemned the directive issued by the Himanta Biswa Sarma-led government. They view the move as a threat to the existence and identity of the Assamese people. The controversial directive, which emerged from the state’s home and political department on July 5, specifically instructs the border police to refrain from taking legal action against individuals from these six communities who entered Assam from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and Pakistan before the cut-off date.
“The decision disregards the strong sentiment of the Assamese people against illegal immigration,” AJP leaders asserted.
The AJP leaders accused the BJP government of consistently undermining the Assamese and other indigenous cultures, languages, and ethnic dignity, labeling the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) a “black law” for Assam. They warned that such legislation would systematically erode the cultural, linguistic, and political power of the Assamese community.
Furthermore, the AJP recalled the Ministry of Home Affairs’ notification on March 11, 2024, which outlined the Citizenship Amendment Rules, thereby enabling the implementation of the CAA passed in 2019.
The regional party also demanded the immediate implementation of Clause 6 of the Assam Accord, criticizing the BJP-led government for failing to safeguard the rights and identity of the indigenous communities. According to the AJP, implementing the Assam Accord in full is essential for ensuring the permanent protection of the indigenous population and their cultural identity.
The AJP’s stance reflects a broader tension within Assam concerning illegal immigration and the protection of indigenous rights amidst evolving national policies.
