Powerful Gale Forces Halt Vital Fishing Operations in Thoothukudi, Sparking Uncertainty and Concern
Fishermen Halt Operations Due to Heavy Westerly Winds
Mechanised boat fishermen in coastal areas abstained from fishing on Tuesday as strong westerly winds battered the coastline and deep sea regions. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) had earlier forecasted the formation of low pressure in the northwest Bay of Bengal by July 19. In anticipation, the southern parts of Tamil Nadu, including Thoothukudi, experienced intensified westerly winds.
Responding promptly to IMD’s predictions, the Department of Fisheries advised fishermen to refrain from venturing out. Consequently, 266 mechanised boats anchored at the Thoothukudi Fishing Harbour remained docked. Additionally, a majority of the country boat fishermen also opted out of their usual fishing activities for the day.
The fishermen are anticipated to resume their operations on Wednesday, provided the wind intensity diminishes substantially.
This precautionary halt in fishing operations highlights the interconnectedness of meteorological conditions and coastal livelihoods, emphasizing the importance of adhering to safety advisories issued by relevant authorities.
