Urgent Warning: Australia PM Demands Russia to ‘Back Off’ Amidst Shocking Espionage Arrest Claims

A Russian diplomat left a plot of land near Australia’s parliament in Canberra, following a legal defeat for Russia’s attempt to build a new embassy. Australia’s top court upheld the government’s decision to seize the land on June 26, 2023. In an escalating diplomatic spat, Russia accused Australia of inciting “anti-Russian paranoia” after charging a Russian-born couple, Kira and Igor Korolev, with espionage.

The Korolevs, who are Australian citizens, were arrested for allegedly trying to access Australia’s national security materials. The Australian Federal Police noted that no significant security breach was discovered. The Russian embassy in Canberra claimed the arrests were a ploy to divert attention from domestic issues faced by Australia’s ruling Labor Party.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese rebuked Russia’s interference and espionage activities, telling Moscow to “back off.” He reiterated that Russia engages in global espionage, while emphasizing Australia’s commitment to national security and sovereignty. This incident comes amid Australia’s support for Ukraine, including a recent A$250 million ($170 million) military aid package announced at a NATO summit in Washington.

The Korolevs appeared in a Brisbane court, facing charges under 2018 espionage laws, each carrying a maximum 15-year prison sentence. They were remanded in custody until September 20 and did not request bail. According to police, the wife, a technician in the Australian Army, traveled to Russia and instructed her husband to access defense materials from her official account.

In addition to its judicial measures, Australia has been actively supplying defense equipment to Ukraine, banning exports of aluminum ores to Russia, and sanctioning over 1,000 Russian individuals and entities. The Russian embassy has requested detailed information from Australian authorities on the Korolevs’ case and is considering consular support options.

This diplomatic conflict underscores the broader tensions between Australia and Russia, further complicated by geopolitical dynamics and the situation in Ukraine.
