Sikkim CM Attends Dalai Lama’s 89th Birthday Celebration in Dharamshala
Dharamshala, July 7, 2024 [IST] – Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang participated in the 89th birthday celebration of His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama at the Dalai Lama Temple in McLeodganj. Welcomed by Central Tibetan Administration (CTA) Sikyong Penpa Tsering and CTA members, Tamang expressed deep humility and honor while addressing the gathering to mark the significant occasion.
The Chief Minister extended heartfelt wishes for the Dalai Lama’s long life and good health, representing the sentiments of the people of Sikkim. Recalling the Dalai Lama’s visit to Sikkim in December 2023, following the devastating floods in October, Tamang highlighted the spiritual leader’s role in providing solace during challenging times.
Tamang emphasized Sikkim’s commitment to sustainable development through initiatives such as "Mero Rukh Mero Santiti" and "Sishu Samriddhi Yojana." The former encourages parents to plant 108 tree saplings for each new birth, while the latter deposits Rs. 10,800 in a child’s name for 18 years. These schemes, he said, reflect the state’s dedication to environmental conservation.
Praising the Dalai Lama’s teachings on compassion and love, Tamang noted, "His teachings address the present world order and its problems." He also prayed for the Dalai Lama’s speedy recovery and continued leadership in promoting a compassionate world.
The Chief Minister acknowledged the hospitality and support provided by the Central Tibetan Administration and the Himachal Pradesh Government during his stay in Dharamshala. He commented on the Dalai Lama’s spiritual presence, despite his physical absence, as the leader is currently in New York.
Sikyong Penpa Tsering congratulated Tamang on his recent electoral victory and thanked him for attending the celebration, highlighting Sikkim’s ongoing support for the Dalai Lama. The Chief Minister also launched "The Tibetan Operatic Chronicle of the Life of Prince Dhepa Tenpa," published by the Tibetan Institute of Performing Arts in honor of the Dalai Lama’s 90th birthday according to the Tibetan calendar.
The event featured attendance from various dignitaries, including Sikkim Legislative Assembly Speaker M.N. Sherpa, several ministers, MLAs, and local and international representatives. Cultural performances by schools and organizations added vibrancy to the celebration.
