Exciting 16th Edition of India-Mongolia Joint Military Exercise Unfolds at Meghalaya’s Umroi – A Milestone in Defense Solidarity
SHILLONG: The 16th edition of the India-Mongolia Joint Military Exercise, “Nomadic Elephant,” commenced today at the Foreign Training Node in Umroi, Meghalaya. The exercise, taking place from July 3 to 16, is designed to enhance joint military capabilities between the two nations.
The Indian team includes 45 personnel from a Battalion of Sikkim Scouts and other arms and services. They will train alongside the Mongolian contingent from the 150 Quick Reaction Force Battalion. This annual exercise alternates between the two countries, with the previous edition conducted in Mongolia in July 2023.
The opening ceremony was attended by Dambajavyn Ganbold, the Ambassador of Mongolia to India, and Major General Prasanna Joshi, General Officer Commanding 51 Sub Area of the Indian Army. Other notable figures included Major General Gyanbyamba Sunrev, Chief of General Staff of the Mongolian Armed Forces, and Lieutenant General Zubin A. Minwalla, General Officer Commanding 33 Corps of the Indian Army, who will be present at the closing ceremony on July 16.
Exercise Nomadic Elephant focuses on enhancing joint military capabilities for counter-insurgency operations in semi-urban and mountainous terrains, aligning with Chapter VII of the United Nations Mandate. The tactical drills include several key operations: responding to terrorist threats, establishing a joint command post, intelligence and surveillance activities, securing helipads, conducting small team insertion and extraction, and performing special heliborne operations. The training also covers cordon and search operations, along with the use of drones and counter-drone systems.
This exercise provides an opportunity for the two armies to share best practices in tactics, techniques, and procedures for conducting joint operations. It aims to foster interoperability, camaraderie, and mutual respect, thereby strengthening defence cooperation and enhancing bilateral relations between India and Mongolia.
