Tragic Incident: Two Workers Suffocate in Waste Disposal Tank in Thrissur
Two workers tragically suffocated in a sullage tank at a bakery’s production unit in Karoor, Aloor panchayat, near Chalakudy, on Wednesday, September 25, around 2 p.m. Identified as Sunil Kumar, 52, and Jithesh, 45, both residents of Thrissur, the incident occurred when they entered the 10×10-ft-wide and 8-ft-high tank to clear a blockage. The tank, which contained about four feet of liquid waste, had severely limited oxygen supply. Jithesh initially entered the tank but failed to reappear, prompting Sunil Kumar to follow, only to meet the same fate.
Sources from the Chalakudy Fire Force reported that by the time they arrived at 2:25 p.m., both workers had already succumbed. Fire and rescue officer Santhosh Kumar, equipped with a breathing apparatus, retrieved their bodies. While the tank is typically cleaned with a suction unit, the two workers entered without safety equipment this time.
The Chalakudy police have registered a case of unnatural death. Despite concerns about potential employer negligence, Rekha Santhosh, a member of Ward 12 of Aloor panchayat, stated no safety violations were involved, as the workers had volunteered for the task.
