Shocking Disruption in China Relations to Impact Global Stability, Warns EAM Jaishankar | India News
India-China Relations: Key to Asia’s Future, Says Jaishankar

New York, Sep 19 – India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has described the India-China relationship as "significantly disturbed," noting its crucial impact on not just Asia’s but the world’s future. Speaking at a think tank in New York, he highlighted the parallel rise of the two nations as a "very unique problem" in global politics. Jaishankar emphasized that a multi-polar world necessitates a multi-polar Asia, making the India-China relationship pivotal.
Jaishankar, set to address the UN General Assembly on Saturday, mentioned that 75% of the "disengagement problems" in eastern Ladakh have been resolved. He clarified that the remaining issues pertain largely to patrolling arrangements along the Line of Actual Control. Diplomatic and military talks have intensified in recent months ahead of a possible meeting between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping at the BRICS summit in October.
The minister detailed that patrolling arrangements have been disrupted since 2020 despite existing agreements intended to maintain border peace. The deployment of a large number of Chinese forces during the Covid-19 pandemic violated these accords, resulting in both nations responding with troop buildups. This escalated to the deadly Galwan Valley clash in 2020, which continues to overshadow bilateral ties.
Jaishankar pointed out that addressing patrolling issues is followed by the broader challenge of de-escalation, given the significant troop presence at the border. He concluded by stressing the importance of restoring peace and adhering to signed agreements to improve the overall relationship.
The situation remains at a critical stage, as indicated by Chinese Ambassador to India Xu Feihong, who last week noted significant progress in mending ties. The future of the India-China relationship, according to Jaishankar, will fundamentally influence Asia’s multi-polar character and, by extension, the global order.
