Outrage Erupts: Furious Protests Against Missionary School in Kamrup After Students Served Beef
Tensions erupted at Carmel School in Andherijuli, Lower Assam’s Kamrup district, over allegations that two Manipur students served beef to their Hindu classmates during a lunch break. The incident, which stirred strong religious sentiments, led to widespread protests eight days after it allegedly occurred.
Hundreds of demonstrators, including local residents and guardians, gathered outside the school’s main gate, blocking entry and disrupting the ongoing half-yearly examinations. They demanded immediate action against the accused students, citing beef as a culturally sensitive issue in the predominantly Hindu area.
Frustrations were fueled by perceived inaction from the school administration. A formal complaint, signed by 69 guardians, was submitted to the Circle Officer of Palashbari Revenue Circle, outlining the sequence of events. The complaint accused two Class 8 students residing in the school hostel of offering beef to their Hindu peers on September 19.
Protestors claimed that the principal did not take adequate steps to address the situation, further aggravating the community. Two guardians approached the school on Monday to lodge a formal complaint but alleged that the principal tried to downplay the severity of the incident. This led to a larger demonstration the next day, with over a hundred guardians and residents demanding accountability.
In response, local authorities, including a police team and a magistrate, arrived to diffuse tensions. They assured protestors that a thorough investigation would be conducted and appropriate action taken. “Yes, a controversy over beef being served to students has come to our notice. A case has been registered and investigation is underway,” DSP Kamrup (Rural) Rajiv Kumar Saikia told India Today NE.
Despite these assurances, no formal charges have been filed, and the situation remains under close scrutiny as both the local community and authorities seek a resolution.
