Meghalaya Partners with Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to Enhance Health, Nutrition, and Agriculture Sectors
Shillong, Sep 24: The Government of Meghalaya has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF) to improve health, nutrition, and agriculture outcomes in the state. This collaboration aims to enhance maternal and newborn health, family planning, nursing education, and agriculture and livestock development. Meghalaya joins Uttar Pradesh and Bihar as the third Indian state to form such a partnership with the Gates Foundation.
The MoU, signed in the presence of Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, Health Minister M. Ampareen Lyngdoh, and BMGF’s India Country Director M. Hari Menon, commits both parties to work towards achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals related to health by 2030. The agreement, set to last four years, involves regular monitoring and evaluation to ensure effective implementation.
Key areas of focus include comprehensive primary healthcare, family planning, maternal and neonatal health, immunization, childhood nutrition, nursing education, supply chain management, digital health, results-based financing, and agricultural development. The Gates Foundation will provide financial and technical support to implement these initiatives.
Chief Minister Sangma emphasized the importance of this partnership in improving the socio-economic conditions of women, stating that the collaboration aims to address real problems through well-thought-out plans and institutional setups. Health Minister Lyngdoh expressed optimism about the potential for this model to be replicated across other northeastern states.
Hari Menon of the Gates Foundation highlighted the organization’s commitment to ensuring equitable access to essential health services and strengthening the state’s health system. Principal Secretary Sampath Kumar noted that this partnership is a significant step towards delivering quality health and nutrition care to the people of Meghalaya.
The Meghalaya State Health Society will coordinate the activities funded by BMGF, aiming to ensure sustainable and equitable healthcare delivery for the state’s population.
