Discover the Top 10 Dynamic Global Talent Hubs Shaping the Future
European countries dominated the 2024 IMD World Talent Ranking, with Switzerland retaining its position as the world’s most talent-competitive nation for the eleventh consecutive year. The ranking assesses 67 economies based on investment in local talent, appeal to foreign talent, and readiness of skills in the labor market. Switzerland excels across investment, development, and overall appeal, buoyed by factors such as quality of life, health infrastructure, and the ability to attract highly skilled personnel.
European countries claimed eight of the top ten spots, with significant representation from Luxembourg, Sweden, Denmark, Iceland, Norway, Netherlands, and Austria. Asia also made a strong showing with Singapore rising to second place and Hong Kong at ninth. Singapore’s ascent is attributed to its highly prepared talent pool, minimal discrimination, and robust labor force growth.
The United States faced challenges, dropping to 21st place overall and struggling particularly in the appeal category, where it fell from second in 2020 to 14th in 2024. High cost of living and personal tax rates were key factors. Additionally, the U.S. ranked 32nd in readiness, hindered by below-average language skills.
The report also focused on the transformative impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on the global workforce. AI’s rapid adoption brings efficiency and productivity but also risks widespread job displacement, especially in routine and automated sectors. Senior economist José Caballero highlighted AI’s potential to exacerbate workplace discrimination, with notable impacts on marginalized communities and women, who face higher automation risks.
While high-income economies may experience short-term disruption and increased discrimination due to AI, they are also poised to gain greater overall benefits. The report underscores the dual-edged nature of AI in influencing talent competitiveness across the globe.
