Guwahati: Economic Challenges and Rejuvenation Plans for Assam’s Tea Gardens
Union Minister of Heavy Industries, H. D. Kumaraswamy, has voiced his concerns about the financial troubles experienced by the Andrew Yule Group’s tea gardens in Assam and their effects on the wage earners. Speaking to the media in Guwahati, Kumaraswamy conveyed his intention to visit the tea gardens shortly and develop strategies for their revitalization.
Kumaraswamy was accompanied by Assam’s Industries and Commerce Minister, Bimal Borah, who has been proactive in seeking the Union Minister’s intervention to alleviate the hardships faced by the tea garden workers. In a significant move, Kumaraswamy announced a 20 percent bonus for the employees of these tea gardens.
The Union Minister also shared details about his recent visit to the Cement Corporation of India Ltd. in Bokajan, highlighting a proposed investment of Rs 700 crore to rejuvenate the cement industry. He underscored the necessity of establishing a cement production facility in the Northeastern states to bolster regional development.
Furthermore, Kumaraswamy expressed contentment with the implementation of the FAME (Faster Adoption & Manufacturing of Electric Vehicles) policy in Assam. He revealed that over Rs 2000 crore would be allocated for battery charging stations, leading to the installation of approximately 70,000 such stations across the country. Additionally, the purchase of over 18,000 electric buses is planned to aid in reducing carbon emissions.
In a bid to enhance the country’s GDP growth, Kumaraswamy stressed the importance of visiting Northeastern states to gather insights for more effective investment planning and developmental initiatives. The event was also attended by Dr. Lakshmanan S, Secretary to the Government of Assam, Industries, Commerce & PE Department.
This visit underscores the government’s commitment to addressing the economic challenges in Assam’s tea gardens and bolstering industrial and environmental initiatives in the region.
