Outrage Over Tamil Nadu Governor’s Secularism Remark: Brinda Karat Condemns
CPI(M) leader Brinda Karat criticized Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi for his remarks on secularism, deeming it “shameful” that someone with such views holds the gubernatorial position. Karat asserted that Ravi’s comments mirror the “RSS understanding” of secularism and warned he might soon allege the Constitution is a “foreign concept.” She emphasized that secularism and the separation of religion from politics are core constitutional values.
Governor Ravi recently stirred controversy by stating that secularism is a European concept irrelevant to India. Speaking at a Hindu Dharma Vidya Peetham event in Kanyakumari, Ravi claimed, “Secularism is not a Bhartiya concept.” His remarks drew sharp criticism from the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), with spokesperson TKS Elangovan contending that secularism is crucial for India and urging the governor to study the Constitution, particularly Article 25’s provision for freedom of religion.
Congress leader P. Chidambaram questioned Ravi’s logic by pointing out that other principles like federalism, democracy, and universal suffrage also originated in Europe. In a social media post, Chidambaram sarcastically suggested that following Ravi’s reasoning, these concepts should also be discarded from India. He further criticized the governor’s understanding of constitutional values and urged such officials to remain silent on matters they misunderstand.
This unfolding debate highlights contention around the interpretation of secularism in India and underscores the political sensitivities surrounding constitutional principles.
