Heartbreaking Devastation: Violent Unrest in Tripura’s Dhalai District Destroys Dozens of Homes and Shops
In the Ganda Twisa sub-division of Tripura’s Dhalai district, a recent surge of violence and arson led to the destruction of approximately 30 to 40 shops and 20 to 25 houses, according to local authorities. Four arrests have been made in connection with this incident.
On July 14, Dhalai District Magistrate Saju Vaheed A and Superintendent of Police Avinash Rai convened a peace meeting to restore local confidence. During the meeting, officials engaged with local businessmen, urging them to reopen the market, which had been shut down for two days due to the unrest.
DM Vaheed disclosed that local businessmen had submitted a four-point charter of demands centered around security concerns. He assured prompt compensation for the affected families and the relocation of those currently housed in shelters back to their homes. In response to local requests, security camps have been established in the affected areas.
SP Rai linked the outburst of violence to rising tensions following a scuffle on July 7 that resulted in one fatality. He emphasized that the situation was quickly brought under control and cautioned residents against believing in rumours.
The violence impacted seven locations on the outskirts of Gandacherra. Authorities continue to investigate the July 12 incident and are optimistic about apprehending the mastermind behind the attacks soon.
Senior officers and Central Armed Police Force personnel have been deployed in substantial numbers to ensure security. The local administration is actively working to assess the damage and provide necessary support to those affected by the unrest. Officials have appealed for peace and reassured the public that comprehensive measures are in place to restore normalcy.
