Urgent Warning: Congress MP Slams Modi Govt, Fears India Becoming a ‘Banana Republic Like Afghanistan’
Congress MP Criticizes Centre’s Handling of Manipur Crisis, Questions Inaction
New Delhi, Sep 22 (PTI) – Amid the ongoing crisis in Manipur, Congress MP A Bimol Akoijam has raised serious concerns about the Centre’s perceived inaction, suggesting that a similar situation in states like Uttar Pradesh or Bihar would not have been neglected. In a candid interview with PTI Videos, Akoijam accused the central government of allowing Manipur to descend into chaos akin to a "banana republic."
The violence, which erupted on May 3, 2023, following a tribal solidarity march protesting against the Meitei community’s push for Scheduled Tribe status, has resulted in over 220 deaths, spanning both the Kuki and Meitei communities, as well as security personnel. Akoijam pointed out that with 60,000 troops stationed in the state, the central government should have managed the situation better.
Akoijam criticized the conflicting stances of BJP MLAs in Manipur on the issue of separate administration, urging Prime Minister Modi to directly intervene. He argued that the government needs to decisively resolve the conflict and suggested that a failure to act is akin to allowing Manipur to devolve into a state of lawlessness, referencing the situation in Afghanistan.
The demand for the creation of a Union Territory by certain Kuki groups has been staunchly rejected by Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh. However, Akoijam stressed that the central government bears significant responsibility for the crisis and must assert authority judiciously.
Akoijam also stressed the erosion of trust in state institutions, including the police, and dismissed Home Minister Amit Shah’s claims of calm in Manipur, arguing that the government’s statements have been more confusing than clarifying. He highlighted the unprecedented nature of the violence in Manipur, noting the severity of the situation and the deep-rooted complexities that make restoring peace a challenging task.
With the situation remaining tense, calls for a robust central response continue to grow, reflecting deep concerns over the future stability and peace in Manipur.
