Historic Victory: Sri Lanka Triumphantly Elects Marxist Leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake as New President
Anura Kumara Dissanayake, a Marxist-leaning leader, has been elected as Sri Lanka’s new President, denoting a significant shift dubbed a “vote for change.” Tasked with the monumental challenge of combating corruption and revitalizing the economy amid the nation’s worst financial crisis in decades, Dissanayake emerged victorious in a historic election—the first since the country’s economic collapse in 2022.
Despite not having a political background, Dissanayake led the polls from the onset, defeating incumbent President Ranil Wickremesinghe and opposition leader Sajith Premadasa. He garnered 5.6 million votes, amounting to 42.3%—a substantial leap from the meager 3% he had secured in the 2019 presidential election.
Following his win, Dissanayake conveyed a heartfelt message on social media, expressing gratitude for the collective effort behind his victory. On X, he proclaimed, “The dream we have nurtured for centuries is finally coming true. This achievement is not the result of any single person’s work, but the collective effort of hundreds of thousands of you. Your commitment has brought us this far, and for that, I am deeply grateful. This victory belongs to all of us.”
He further asserted that the “millions of eyes filled with hope and expectation push us forward,” pledging that together, they “stand ready to rewrite Sri Lankan history.”
The election served as a litmus test for Wickremesinghe, whose recovery efforts post-2022 crisis were marred by unpopular austerity measures, effectively dampening his chances of regaining office. He finished third with just 17% of the vote.
Notably, this election marked the first time in Sri Lanka’s history that a presidential election required a second round of counting, as no candidate achieved the necessary 50% majority initially. This underscores Dissanayake’s achievement and his mandate for change amid a challenging political landscape.
