Empowering Gorkha Students: Preserve Your Rich Culture While Achieving Unstoppable Success
The 8th United Gorkha Freshmen Social Meet was successfully held on September 22 at the Srimanta Sankardeva International Auditorium, Panjabari, Guwahati. Organized by the All College Gorkha Students’ Unit of Guwahati, the event aimed to welcome and integrate new students into the academic and cultural life of the city.
Assam Education Minister Ranoj Pegu attended as the Chief Guest. In his address, he emphasized the dual importance of academic excellence and cultural preservation. Highlighting the contributions of the Gorkha community to Assam’s heritage, Pegu urged the students to actively participate in the state’s development.
Speaking exclusively to India Today NE, Pegu noted the diversity of Guwahati, where around 5,000 Gorkha students from various districts come to study. He appreciated the united efforts behind the Gorkha Social Meet and stressed the importance of community identity in a diverse society. He encouraged the students to pursue success while staying true to their Gorkha heritage.
Pegu also discussed the Assam government’s educational reforms, stating that the Gorkha community, classified under OBC, benefits from a 27 percent special reservation similar to that of the tea worker community. He mentioned that sub-categorization of OBC is on the government’s agenda.
Former All Assam Gorkha Students Union (AAGSU) President Arjun Chetry explained the meet’s vision to unite and guide students from outside Guwahati, steering them away from negative influences through educational and cultural events. Chetry highlighted the importance of these gatherings, especially for younger students, to help them mature and avoid bad habits.
The event saw enthusiastic participation from students across various colleges in Guwahati. It featured a variety of cultural performances, including traditional Gorkha dances and songs, enhancing the sense of community and cultural pride among the attendees.
