Nagaland Celebrates Historic Paralympic Medal, Calls for Greater Support for Para-athletes

Nagaland’s Hokato Hotozhe Sema has made history by winning a bronze medal at the Paris Paralympics 2024, marking the state’s first-ever medal at an elite sporting level by a para-athlete. This achievement has ignited calls for enhanced support and recognition for parasports within the state.
Diethono Nakhro, State Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities, lauded Sema’s achievement as monumental, noting it serves as a profound inspiration for young disabled athletes in Nagaland. Highlighting the importance of substantial support, she commended the Rs 1.5 crore reward from the State Government as a commitment to promoting sports excellence among the disabled community. Nakhro emphasized the need for greater investment in infrastructure, training facilities, and funding to elevate para-athletes to higher levels of competition.
In tandem, Vikengunu Fatima Kera, President of the Nagaland State Disability Forum (NSDF), underscored the lack of infrastructure and long-term support from the government, despite significant talent within the community. She expressed gratitude for the efforts of the Directorate of Youth Resources & Sports, private donors, and the disability nodal department, yet she called for more structured initiatives to nurture disabled sportspersons.
Kezhaleto Zecho, Assistant Coach of the Nagaland Blind Football Team, echoed these sentiments, advocating for genuine inclusion in parasports. He recounted challenges faced due to inadequate support, hoping Sema’s victory catalyzes robust programs and mechanisms to develop para-athletes.
Sema’s success has also inspired individuals like Vethi Khesoh, who aspires to excel in cricket and arm wrestling, reinvigorating their resolve to achieve greatness despite the challenges.
Finally, Temsutola Jamir, a National Award recipient for Persons with Disabilities, emphasized the need for proper facilities and guidance for disabled athletes, urging the state government to support sports as a viable career for disabled individuals.
The broader disability community in Nagaland remains hopeful that Sema’s remarkable feat will lead to lasting changes, ensuring future para-athletes receive the support they need to excel.
