Congress MP Urges Assam Government to Honor Language Martyrs with Renaming of Silchar Railway Station
Assam Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi has urged the Assam state government to rename the Silchar Railway Station in honor of the eleven language martyrs, known as Bhasha Sahids, of Silchar. This move aims to commemorate their significant contributions to the 1961 Language Movement in Barak Valley.
In a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Gogoi emphasized that renaming the station would be a fitting tribute to the martyrs’ enduring legacy. However, a recent response from the Union Government reveals that the BJP-led Assam government has not yet submitted a formal proposal for the change.
Niraj Sahay, Principal Chief Commercial Manager of the Northeast Frontier Railway, clarified in a letter dated September 3, 2024, that renaming a railway station requires the state government’s recommendation and the Ministry of Home Affairs’ approval. Sahay’s communication was in response to a prior request from Gogoi and highlighted the procedural necessities for such an alteration.
Gogoi has now called on the Assam government to expedite the submission of the necessary proposal, addressing the longstanding demand to honor the language martyrs appropriately.
In related news, Minister Ashok Singhal recently asserted that there would be zero tolerance for any compromises in implementing the Orunodoi scheme.
