Mizoram PWD Minister Swiftly Responds to Highway Crisis, Ensuring Prompt Repair and Relief
Mizoram Rushes to Repair Critical Highways Amid Fuel Shortages
Aizawl: The Mizoram Public Works Department (PWD) is urgently addressing the dire condition of National Highway-306 and National Highway-6, which is severely impacting the transport of essential commodities, including oil tankers and goods-laden trucks. These highways serve as Mizoram’s primary connection to Assam and the rest of India.
Currently, Mizoram faces a severe shortage of fuel and essential goods due to hundreds of stranded vehicles unable to traverse the damaged highways. In response, the Mizoram Oil Tanker Drivers’ Association (MOTDA) and Petroleum Entrepreneurs’ and Transporters’ Union of Mizoram (PETUM) have suspended their operations since Tuesday.
PWD Minister Vanlalhlana conducted an inspection of the most affected sections—the Kawnpui-Khamrang stretch of NH-6 and a portion of NH-306 between Kawnpui and Sethawn in Kolasib district. He assured that the state government is maximizing all available resources to expedite repairs, starting with the worst-hit sections to make the roads motorable as soon as possible.
PWD officials have been tasked with fast-tracking the repair works. On Wednesday, all vehicles stranded between Kawnpui and Khamrang on NH-6 were mobilized, and a temporary halt on vehicular movement has been enforced from Thursday to Saturday to facilitate swift repairs.
MOTDA and PETUM leaders plan to inspect the repair progress on Friday and will only resume operations if the highways meet the required standards for safe transportation of oil. The state government remains committed to alleviating the transportation crisis and ensuring the steady flow of essential commodities.
