Two Generations of Artistic Brilliance on Display at KNMA Gallery
A fascinating exhibition featuring the works of artists Amitava and Mohan Samant from different generations is currently on display at the Kiran Nadar Museum of Art (KNMA) in Saket, Delhi. Their artworks intertwine to create a narrative that touches the human conscience and invites viewers to delve into the mysterious and unknown.
Amitava’s display includes pieces like If We Knew The Point and Untitled (1977), which utilize waterproof colored ink and colored pencil on handmade paper. His works, influenced by films and literature from icons like Tagore, Kurosawa, and Tarkovsky, offer a mesmerizing light against somber backdrops. His compositions, dense with overlapping lines and fragmented figures, speak to the dehumanization of humanity. He also embeds ephemera like stamps and bus tickets, adding layers of meaning. Sociology student Tanya Sharma described his aesthetic as "compelling and open to interpretation."
In contrast, Mohan Samant’s centennial exhibition, Magic in the Square, showcases his experimental spirit. Transitioning from conventional media like watercolors to mixed media involving acrylic, sand, and wire, Samant’s work includes totemic and fossil-like forms layered to create depth and cavities. His artistry often calls back to ancestral and primordial themes, fortified by his love for Indian music and instruments like the sarangi.
Curator Roobina Karode expresses satisfaction with the exhibition’s draw, especially among the youth. This showcase of Samant’s previously overlooked works, and Amitava’s complex pieces, celebrates dynamic art practices reflective of their times.
The exhibition runs at KNMA Saket until September 30 (closed on Mondays and national holidays), from 10:30 am to 6:30 pm, with free entry.
