Defiant Arunachal Pradesh Students’ Union Boldly Opposes Controversial Cow Protection Rally in Itanagar
The All Arunachal Pradesh Students’ Union (AAPSU) has formally requested the Deputy Commissioner of Itanagar Capital Region to deny permission for a rally proposed by Jagat Guru Shankaracharya on September 27, 2024, in Itanagar.
In their letter, AAPSU voiced significant concerns about the rally’s potential impact on the unique culture, traditions, and interests of the Indigenous tribal population of Arunachal Pradesh. The students’ body highlighted the region’s diverse cultural and religious demographics, warning that the rally could exacerbate tensions and disrupt state harmony.
The AAPSU emphasized Arunachal Pradesh’s status as a wholly tribal state with rich and varied cultural heritage safeguarded by laws such as the Bengal Eastern Frontier Regulation (BEFR) of 1873. They expressed worries that any remarks or actions critical of tribal food habits and traditions could spark unrest and pose serious law and order issues.
“The open dictation or criticism of the tribal food habits and the traditions that accompany them could create unnecessary unrest and provoke serious law and order issues. Such acts or preaching, which are in contradiction to the ecology and cultural ethos of the state, might offend the sentiments of the indigenous people, causing discontent and possible conflict within the community,” the letter stated.
Given these potential threats to state harmony, AAPSU insists that the proposed rally should not be permitted. They argued that allowing events that challenge or undermine tribal customs and traditions could lead to tension and disharmony.
In conclusion, AAPSU’s appeal underscores the urgency of prioritizing unity and cultural respect in maintaining social harmony within Arunachal Pradesh.
