AWJF to Hold Training on Reporting Climate Change and Gender
Guwahati: The Assam Women Journalists’ Forum (AWJF), in partnership with Gauhati University’s Department of Communication and Journalism, is organizing a training session titled “Reporting Climate Change and Gender” on September 19. This initiative aims to equip journalists with essential skills to accurately cover the complex interplay between climate change and gender issues.
Assam and the North East region are particularly vulnerable to the severe impacts of climate change, such as frequent floods and earthquakes that significantly affect human lives and livelihoods. Given these challenges, the training session seeks to provide journalists with specific skills and knowledge necessary for effective reporting on these critical topics.
Resource persons for the session are distinguished and award-winning journalists, including PTI’s Bureau Chief Durba Ghosh, Dainik Agradoot’s News Editor Samim Sultana Ahmed, and independent journalists Mubina Akhtar, Ratna Bharali Talukdar, Chandrani Singha, and Angana Chakrabarti. These experts bring extensive experience in covering biodiversity, environment, wildlife, climate change, and gender issues in the North East.
The training will focus on key reporting techniques and the salient points to consider when covering such complex topics. Participants will also be briefed on the Dos and Don’ts of reporting to ensure ethical and accurate journalism.
Additionally, the AWJF aims to use this platform to mentor and skill new entrants to the media industry. It also emphasizes bridging the gap between academia and industry by coordinating with various Mass Communication departments and institutes, thereby facilitating the professional growth of journalism students in the region.
This initiative underscores the AWJF’s commitment to enhancing the professional capabilities of women journalists in Assam and fostering an informed, skilled media community that can effectively address pressing issues like climate change and gender.
