Heartwarming Initiative: Schools in Arunachal’s Changlang Rally to Protect Endangered Hoolock Gibbon
Schools near Arunachal Pradesh’s Namdapha Tiger Reserve in Changlang district have launched an awareness campaign to promote the conservation of the endangered Hoolock Gibbon, the state animal. This initiative, spearheaded by ‘Aaranyak’ in collaboration with the Namdapha Tiger Reserve Authority and Arcus Foundation, began on August 22. So far, it has reached 17 schools in the Miao subdivision.
The campaign aims to engage students from areas surrounding the tiger reserve, fostering a community capable of contributing to future Hoolock Gibbon conservation efforts. The program’s sessions have included lectures, documentary screenings, photographs, interactive discussions, and the distribution of educational materials such as books, posters, and stickers.
Namdapha Tiger Reserve Director V. K. Jawal expressed gratitude to ‘Aaranyak’ for organizing the drive, which he sees as crucial for the conservation of Hoolock Gibbons. He emphasized the responsibility of Arunachal Pradesh’s residents to protect this endangered primate.
Dr. Dilip Chetry, a senior primatologist from ‘Aaranyak’ and head of its Primate Research and Conservation Division, explained that the Hoolock Gibbon is limited to areas south of the Brahmaputra-Dibang River system. The Namdapha Tiger Reserve, covering 2,220 sq km, is a vital habitat for these gibbons. According to Chetry, habitat loss and hunting are significant threats to their survival.
The educational program is not only aimed at Hoolock Gibbon conservation but also seeks to enhance the overall biodiversity of the Namdapha Tiger Reserve and surrounding regions. The initiative is set to expand to cover most of the Changlang district in the near future.
Previously, Mithun was the state animal of Arunachal Pradesh, but it has recently been changed to the Hoolock Gibbon, reflecting the state’s commitment to conserving this endangered species.
