Historic Leap: Cabinet’s Bold Approval Ignites Hope for ‘One Nation, One Election’
‘One Nation, One Election’ Gains Momentum with Cabinet Approval
New Delhi: The Union Cabinet has sanctioned the ‘one nation, one election’ initiative, which proposes simultaneous Lok Sabha, state Assembly, urban body, and panchayat elections, potentially starting by 2029. The decision aligns with recommendations from a panel led by ex-President Ram Nath Kovind. This panel, including key ministers such as Home Minister Amit Shah and Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal, unanimously endorsed the proposal.
The plan, part of the BJP’s 2019 and 2024 election manifesto, faces opposition over constitutional and practical concerns. An undeterred government aims to implement this during PM Narendra Modi’s third term, despite needing two-thirds parliamentary support and ratification by states and UTs.
Proponents argue that synchronized elections can transform governance, optimize resources, and enhance economic stability. They emphasize that a uniform electoral schedule minimizes disruptions in supply chains and production cycles, aiding businesses in decision-making without policy change fears. Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw noted significant public support during initial discussions.
However, critics, including 15 opposition parties, deem the proposition impractical. Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge labeled it a distraction from pressing issues, while Mamata Banerjee of Trinamool Congress warned it might undermine the Constitution’s basic structure. Regional concerns also include the high cost of new EVMs and potential challenges in addressing local issues during high-stakes national elections.
The ‘one nation, one election’ strategy aims for India to vote for all levels of government concurrently. While Andhra Pradesh, Sikkim, and Odisha currently align their state elections with general elections, the proposal could extend this synchronization nationwide, requiring substantial legal revisions and broad consent.
