Dominique Pelicot, a 71-year-old French national, has admitted to drugging his wife to facilitate sexual assaults by himself and dozens of other men. During his initial testimony, Pelicot declared, “I am a rapist,” a statement which has sent shockwaves through France. He acknowledged that the 50 other defendants in the mass trial, men he recruited online, were aware of their roles in these heinous acts. “They all knew,” he confirmed, adding that his wife, Gisele Pelicot, did not deserve such treatment.
Pelicot’s confession is expected to play a pivotal role in the proceedings against the other accused individuals, ranging from ages 26 to 74, including professionals such as a fireman, a male nurse, a prison guard, and a journalist. Although investigators listed 72 men suspected in the case, only 50 were identified and are now on trial.
The charges against Dominique Pelicot include administering anti-anxiety drugs to his wife over nearly a decade, from 2011 to 2020, and orchestrating her rape while she was unconscious. During the trial, which commenced on September 2, Pelicot recounted his difficult childhood, mentioning that his parents were abusive and citing two traumatic events: being raped at the age of nine and another assault on a construction site as an apprentice.
Pelicot’s former wife, Gisele, who recently divorced him, remained stoic while he spoke, later expressing disbelief at her husband’s betrayal. In an emotional plea, Pelicot asked for forgiveness from his wife, children, and grandchildren. “I am guilty of what I have done. I beg my wife, my children, my grandchildren… to accept my apologies,” he said, seeking absolution for his actions.
This harrowing testimony is expected to influence the outcomes of the forthcoming hearings for the other defendants in this disturbing and extensive case of sexual abuse.
