Justice in the Spotlight: SC Denies Kapil Sibal’s Emotional Plea to Halt Live Streaming of Kolkata Rape-Murder Case Proceedings for Public Interest
The Supreme Court began hearing a suo motu case on Tuesday concerning the rape and murder of a postgraduate medical student at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. Representing the West Bengal government, senior advocate Kapil Sibal requested the cessation of live streaming of the case, citing threats of acid attacks and rape against women lawyers. Despite these concerns, the Supreme Court denied the request, emphasizing the public interest in maintaining live proceedings. The bench, led by Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud and including Justices J B Pardiwala and Manoj Misra, reassured Sibal that the court would intervene if any threats materialized.
